According to Research, Galaxy Digital’s Bullish Outlook Centers on AI Data Centers Over Bitcoin Mining

Rittenhouse Research Rates Galaxy Digital a Strong Buy, Citing Strategic Shift to AI Data Centers

Galaxy Digital’s (GLXY) evolution from bitcoin mining to AI data centers is drawing strong attention from analysts at Rittenhouse Research, a new fintech, AI, and crypto-focused research firm. They’ve issued a robust buy recommendation based on Galaxy’s smart pivot driven by its acquisition of Argos’ Helios data center in late 2022.

Back then, the Helios purchase was viewed as a bailout for a struggling bitcoin miner in the aftermath of the FTX crisis. However, with the rise of AI technologies such as ChatGPT, this data center has become a valuable asset amid surging demand for AI infrastructure, marking a dramatic shift for Galaxy.

Rittenhouse highlights that Galaxy’s shift away from bitcoin mining—a business characterized by volatile returns and high capital expenditure—to AI data centers offers a more stable and lucrative revenue model. AI facilities generate consistent cash flows through long-term leases with large-scale cloud providers, contrasting with the unpredictability of bitcoin mining profits, which decline with each halving event.

The analysts argue that Galaxy’s Helios facility exemplifies this new model, providing dependable income without the constant need for new mining hardware investment. They contrast this with bitcoin mining’s inherent reliance on favorable BTC prices and advances in chip efficiency—factors fraught with uncertainty.

While some competitors have retroactively claimed diversification beyond mining, Rittenhouse asserts that few intended to pivot until AI’s explosive growth demanded it. Galaxy, by contrast, was uniquely positioned due to its timely Helios acquisition.

Galaxy’s move aligns with a growing trend among miners seeking entry into AI and cloud sectors. Still, Rittenhouse stresses Galaxy’s superior position, bolstered by a strong balance sheet boasting $1.8 billion in net cash and investments, a solid track record, and the crucial CoreWeave lease deal.

Despite market concerns about CoreWeave’s financial health, the research firm downplays risks, citing the company’s steady revenue stream—96% from long-term contracts—and carefully structured debt tied to secured customer projects, minimizing default probability.

Importantly, Galaxy has now fully exited bitcoin mining, dedicating itself to AI infrastructure—sending a positive signal to hyperscalers.

Cipher Mining’s CEO Tyler Page recently acknowledged the challenge miners face in winning over AI clients, noting the daunting scale of investment required. Galaxy avoids this issue, with its Helios facility and no mining liabilities positioning it well for growth.

If Rittenhouse’s outlook proves accurate, Galaxy Digital’s accidental pivot could mark one of the most compelling success stories in the crypto sector’s recent history.
