XRP Ledger Breakthrough: x402 Set to Revolutionize Transactions

The x402 protocol has facilitated more than 1.43 million agent-driven transactions and processed 4,463 XRP in merchant settlements on the XRP Ledger, offering the clearest signal yet of real-world adoption for agentic payments.

In the latest Ripple update, the XRP Ledger recorded 1,434,517 autonomous AI-powered transactions as of July 22, 2026—marking a 127% increase since the x402 protocol was deployed on June 9.

A total of 129 merchants completed settlements totaling 4,463.24 XRP and 1,895.14 RLUSD through machine-to-machine payment channels. At the same time, active addresses climbed to an all-time high of 8.45 million, according to CoinMarketCap.

This milestone represents the first sustained evidence that a purpose-built agentic payments layer on a public blockchain can attract merchant adoption and generate meaningful settlement volume within weeks of launch, without dependence on speculative trading activity.

Meanwhile, XRP has slipped 0.5% over the past 24 hours to trade at $1.12. Holding support at $1.10 remains key for any potential move toward $1.20, with daily trading volume at $924 million.

The x402 protocol works by leveraging the HTTP 402 “payment required” response, enabling AI agents to transact directly with other agents or services—paying for compute resources, data, or API access without manual wallet handling or human approval.

Transactions are finalized within seconds on the XRP Ledger, with fees burned on each transfer, gradually reducing the circulating supply with every agentic payment.

RippleX head of engineering J. Ayo Akinyele described current activity as an early baseline, projecting the network could scale to between 10 million and 100 million agentic transactions over the next two years.

The deployment of x402 on June 9 was followed by Ripple’s release of the XRPL AI Starter Kit on June 10—a developer toolkit that enables AI agents to process payments via the ledger, including integrations with the Claude API.

Ripple has also joined the x402 Foundation under the Linux Foundation and expanded the XRPL AI Hub, a platform that provides real-time tracking of x402 payment activity, developer tools, and support for AI agent integrations. The hub was developed with contributions from Ripple engineers and the XRP Ledger Foundation.

According to boerse-global.de, XRP settlement volume through x402 has surged 289% since the XRPL AI Starter Kit launch. RLUSD plays a complementary role in these transactions, reflecting a dual-asset approach where XRP handles crypto-native settlements while RLUSD offers stablecoin-based pricing for counterparties.

At the WebX conference in mid-July, Ripple vice president Fiona Murray noted that monthly transaction volume on the XRP Ledger has increased twelvefold since the introduction of RLUSD.

Despite strong network activity, institutional signals remain mixed. On July 20, S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital launched the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index, which tracks 18 assets selected based on market capitalization and liquidity. XRP was notably excluded without explanation, with S&P’s Cathy Clay stating the index prioritizes measurable economic activity over price momentum.

The conversation is now shifting from whether the XRP Ledger can generate transaction volume—recently confirmed at 1.43 million payments—to whether revenue recognition models for digital assets can evolve quickly enough to reflect growing protocol utility.

On-chain data shows that wallets holding between 100,000 and 100 million XRP increased their holdings by 2.8% over five weeks, while large inflows to Binance dropped to their lowest level since January 2025. Since November 2025, cumulative inflows into XRP spot ETFs have approached $1.5 billion.

The gap between XRPL’s rising transaction metrics and its absence from institutional benchmarks could narrow if the x402 Foundation’s multi-chain expansion succeeds. By May 2026, x402 transactions across 14 blockchains had already exceeded 160 million, though consistent revenue generation will be critical to meeting S&P’s inclusion criteria.
