Live: BTC Tops $80,000 as Bitcoin Rally Accelerates in U.S. Hours

Bitcoin climbed back above $80,000 as U.S. trading got underway, extending its recovery despite weakness across major U.S. stock indexes. The cryptocurrency approached $81,000 after gaining about 5% over the previous 24 hours.

The move came after the Bank of Japan increased its policy rate by 25 basis points to 1.25%. The yen nevertheless weakened, with USD/JPY rising to 157.65 and the Japanese currency losing more than 1%.

Bitcoin Rebounds After Early-Week Weakness

Bitcoin had come under pressure earlier in the week after the CLARITY Act failed to advance and the Federal Reserve delivered a 25-basis-point rate increase.

The latest rally has also lifted publicly traded crypto companies. Strategy shares rose 11%, Coinbase gained 9% and Robinhood advanced 7%.

The broader U.S. stock market was less supportive. The Nasdaq 100, S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average all traded lower, while the Russell 2000 and software-focused equities also declined.

At the same time, global bond yields moved higher. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield climbed above 5%, while yields in Germany, France and the U.K. also increased. The U.S. Dollar Index approached 100.5, while precious metals posted modest gains.

ProCap Set for Russell Index Inclusion

ProCap Financial is scheduled to join the Russell 2000 and Russell 3000 indexes on Monday.

The company originally emerged during the 2025 wave of bitcoin treasury firms but has since shifted its focus toward agentic finance. It plans to rebrand as Silvia and adopt the SVIA ticker on Sept. 22.

ProCap continues to maintain a bitcoin treasury of more than 5,000 BTC despite the change in its business strategy.

Yen Falls Despite BOJ Hike

The BOJ’s 25-basis-point increase did little to strengthen the yen. USD/JPY reached 157.65, putting the currency more than 1% lower.

The latest decline has renewed attention on Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who previously stepped in when USD/JPY approached 162. The yen has since given back roughly half of the gains recorded after that intervention.

The Federal Reserve raised rates by 25 basis points earlier in the week, taking the federal funds target range to 3.75%–4.00%. With the DXY above 100 and expectations for additional Fed hikes, pressure on the yen could remain elevated.

Buffett to Step Down as Berkshire Chairman

Warren Buffett is preparing to leave his role as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway after 61 years at the helm.

The 96-year-old investor announced the change in a shareholder letter Friday, according to CNBC. Buffett will remain a director and chairman emeritus, while his son Howard Buffett is set to become chairman. Susan Decker will serve as lead independent director.

Buffett has historically expressed skepticism toward bitcoin, making his departure another notable development for the long-time investor.

Crypto Stocks and Tokens Extend Gains

Risk assets were already moving higher ahead of Friday’s U.S. session. QQQ futures were up 0.5%, bitcoin gained about 2% above $78,000, and gold rose 1% to trade just below $4,400.

The 10-year Treasury yield stood at 4.96%, while AI, memory and semiconductor-related ETFs also advanced.

Bullish, the parent company of CoinDesk, gained 3%, while Securitize rose 7% after the SEC introduced an innovation exemption supporting tokenized stock markets. Coinbase and Robinhood, which each gained about 5% Thursday, added another 2% in premarket trading Friday.

Among cryptocurrencies, HYPE climbed 11% to nearly $89, while Zcash gained 8% to around $1,472. Solana rose 6% above $106. BNB and Dogecoin advanced about 4%, while XRP, Ethereum and Bitcoin gained roughly 2%. TRON added less than 1%.

Bitcoin briefly fell to $75,972 during U.S. trading before recovering. Its move above $80,000 marked a third straight daily advance, while the total cryptocurrency market capitalization increased 2% to about $2.66 trillion.

FxPro chief analyst Alex Kuptsikevich said all 40 of the most liquid cryptocurrencies were trading higher, with investors cautiously shifting some attention toward altcoins. The broader altcoin season index remained subdued, although NEAR jumped 30%, UNI gained 26% and APT rose 18%.

The latest advance followed stronger risk appetite in equities after the Fed’s quarter-point rate increase. Bitcoin is now approaching the upper end of its recent range near $82,000, although weekend profit-taking could delay a test of that level, according to Kuptsikevich.
