Michael Saylor Rejects Bitcoin Obituary: ‘The Orange Tie Stays’

Jason Calacanis compared Bitcoin with technologies that lost relevance as newer platforms emerged, likening the cryptocurrency to CDs after Spotify and DVDs after Netflix.

Calacanis made the comparison as bitcoin climbed back toward $80,000 on Friday, calling the move another “dead cat” bounce and questioning what Bitcoin has accomplished nearly 17 years after its launch.

He argued that Bitcoin has not become a leading option for transactions or smart contracts and said its user experience remains difficult. Calacanis also claimed the cryptocurrency has lost much of the public attention and excitement it once attracted.

He suggested that Bitcoin now generates more nostalgia than enthusiasm when it comes up in casual conversation.

Calacanis said people increasingly expect bitcoin to hold its value rather than deliver quick gains, describing the asset as “boring.” He also argued that Bitcoin’s early rebellious image has been replaced by mainstream advocates wearing orange ties and sharing memes.

He further said Bitcoin would have already reached mass adoption or established a dominant use case if it were going to deliver on those expectations.

Saylor Points to Bitcoin’s Wealth-Preservation Role

Michael Saylor responded by highlighting Bitcoin’s development since 2011 and its current market value.

Saylor said Bitcoin has grown into a $1.6 trillion asset and described it as the world’s most valuable digital asset.

He identified “Digital Capital” as Bitcoin’s key application, arguing that preserving wealth across generations is a more significant goal than generating excitement at social gatherings.

Saylor concluded his response with the statement: “The orange tie stays.”
