Bitcoin Stalls Under $83,500 as Smaller Cryptocurrencies Lead Market Gains

Altcoins Rally Ahead of Bitcoin as BTC Stays Below $83,500

Smaller cryptocurrencies are leading Monday’s market advance, with the CoinDesk 80 index gaining around 3% over 24 hours. That performance is more than twice the 1.2% increase posted by the CoinDesk 5 index, which tracks the largest digital assets.

Bitcoin (BTC) remains below $83,500 after briefly moving above $84,000 on Sunday. Ether (ETH) has risen about 2.5% to approximately $2,560.

The latest gains are concentrated among assets with thinner market liquidity. CoinDesk research found that Bitcoin and Ether order-book depth, measured in dollars, has returned to levels recorded before the October 10, 2025, flash crash. Liquidity across altcoins has continued to weaken since then.

“Market makers have returned to majors,” Joshua de Vos, CoinDesk’s research lead, said in a report released Saturday.

Institutional investment flows paint a weaker picture. U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $681 million in net outflows last week, the largest weekly withdrawal since June, according to SoSoValue. Most of the outflows occurred on Wednesday and Thursday. Spot Ether ETFs have not recorded a single day of net inflows since September 28, extending their withdrawal streak to nine days, the longest since June.

Oil prices have also moved lower. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures declined approximately 2% to $90 a barrel after U.S. President Donald Trump said Russia would supply 300,000 metric tons of diesel to global markets under an arrangement that partially eases sanctions. Market attention is now shifting toward Wednesday’s U.S. consumer price index (CPI) release.

Derivatives: Key Market Trends

Futures activity has increased sharply, but open positions have grown only slightly. Trading volume reached $126 billion over the past 24 hours, an 81% increase. Open interest (OI), representing the dollar value of outstanding contracts, rose just 2.44% to $145.8 billion. This points to faster trading and position turnover rather than a significant expansion in market exposure.

Aggressive buyers have moved ahead of sellers. Long positions accounted for 52% of 24-hour taker volume, compared with 48% last week. Taker volume measures trades executed immediately against existing orders, providing an indication of which side is trading more aggressively.

Zcash is attracting heavy futures turnover without a major increase in new positions. ZEC ranked fourth in 24-hour futures volume at $5.46 billion, trailing Bitcoin, Ether and SOL. Its price rose 6%, while open interest increased 7%. Since OI is measured in dollars, a rising price can lift the figure even if the number of contracts changes little. After accounting for the price effect, open contracts increased by only about 1%. Annualized funding is at 10%, indicating that long traders are paying shorts to maintain their positions. Cumulative volume delta (CVD), which tracks the balance between aggressive buyers and sellers, is only marginally positive.

NEAR’s rally is accompanied by stronger growth in open contracts. The token gained 10%, while OI rose 17%, equivalent to roughly 6% more open contracts. Funding rates are positive, as with ZEC. NEAR also records the second-highest 24-hour OI-adjusted CVD among major tokens, suggesting that buyers are driving the advance. Its price has reached its highest level since December.

Leverage demand for Bitcoin and Ether remains weak. Open interest in both assets has barely moved over the past 24 hours and remains well below the highs recorded earlier this year. Trading volumes remain within normal ranges.

Options traders are not anticipating major near-term swings in BTC or ETH. Bitcoin’s implied volatility index, BVIV, has struggled to break above 40% after recovering from year-to-date lows near 34% last week. Ether’s index shows a similar trend. Implied volatility measures the market’s expectations for future price movements, and the subdued readings suggest options traders are not preparing for a major move.

Hyperliquid’s oil markets show signs of crowded short positioning. Traders betting on lower oil prices are paying long positions annualized funding rates of 100% or more. These payments help keep perpetual futures prices aligned with spot markets, with the more crowded side typically paying the other. The elevated rates suggest short positions could unwind quickly if oil prices move higher.

Bitcoin put options are attracting demand for downside protection on Deribit. Puts with strike prices between $55,000 and $80,000 account for a large share of 24-hour Bitcoin options volume. These contracts can gain value as prices decline and are commonly used as hedges. Ether options activity is more evenly distributed, with both calls and puts appearing among the five most-traded contracts.

Altcoins and Token News

Starknet (STRK) has climbed 76% over the past week, including a 33% gain on Friday and a further 54% rise on Saturday. The rally comes as the network weighs leaving Ethereum to become a standalone, quantum-resistant layer-1 blockchain. Leverage has helped fuel the move, but traders began taking profits on Monday, sending STRK down 7.7%.

LayerZero (ZRO) has risen 21% in 24 hours to $2.41, reaching its highest price since May 2025 as its market capitalization approached $1 billion. The move appears to be a rebound from oversold conditions rather than a response to a specific news announcement.

Zcash (ZEC) has gained even as it appears in the transaction trail associated with the Ledger reseller supply-chain attack. The attacker reportedly moved stolen ether through Tornado Cash before converting the funds into ZEC through NEAR Intents. Estimated losses connected to devices sold by Malaysian reseller CryptoBilis range from $86 million to $93 million. Ledger has confirmed that at least one affected device contained an unauthorized hardware implant.

CoinMarketCap’s “Altcoin Season” indicator has reached 66 out of 100, its highest reading in more than a year. The signal reflects rising speculative activity in smaller cryptocurrencies as Bitcoin continues to trade within a consolidation range of $80,000 to $88,000.
