Bitcoin Extends Losses Below $83K Amid Lingering Market Uncertainty

Bitcoin and gold edged lower as a firm U.S. dollar and climbing Treasury yields weighed on investor sentiment. Meanwhile, IREN, which is transitioning from cryptocurrency mining to AI infrastructure, reportedly secured a multiyear cloud services agreement with Anthropic.

Strategy Adds 250 Bitcoin to Its Treasury

Strategy (MSTR) acquired another 250 BTC for $21.5 million last week while spending $192.4 million on buybacks of its variable-rate preferred stock, STRC.

The purchases were made from October 5 to October 11 at an average price of $86,194 per bitcoin. Following the transactions, Strategy’s total holdings reached 848,250 BTC. The company’s cumulative Bitcoin investment stands at approximately $64 billion, with an average acquisition cost of $75,444 per coin.

Strategy funded the purchases with $21 million in net proceeds from selling 125,183 MSTR shares through its at-the-market (ATM) equity offering program, plus $500,000 from its cash reserves.

The company also repurchased approximately 1.93 million STRC shares, leaving $354.8 million available for additional buybacks under the preferred-stock repurchase program.

MSTR shares advanced 1% in premarket trading.

Markets Await U.S. Inflation Data as Yields Rise

Trading began cautiously, with Bitcoin hovering above $83,000 and gold near $4,180 an ounce. Both assets declined by roughly 0.5%.

Technology futures were slightly lower, while West Texas Intermediate crude rose above $92 per barrel. Treasury yields moved higher as bond prices weakened, giving back some ground after a short-lived rebound in the second half of the previous week. During that recovery, the long-duration U.S. Treasury ETF TLT gained more than 2%.

The dollar remained resilient, with the DXY index trading above 102.4.

Wednesday’s U.S. inflation report is the key economic event on this week’s calendar. Annual core inflation is forecast at 2.5%, while headline inflation is expected to reach 3.7%, potentially indicating renewed acceleration from the previous month.

IREN Shares Rise on Reported Anthropic Agreement

IREN (IREN), which has been redirecting its business toward AI infrastructure after operating as a Bitcoin miner, has secured a multiyear cloud services deal with Anthropic, according to The Information.

IREN shares rose 4% before the market opened.
