After Indonesia, Strategy Faces New Uncertainty Over MSCI Delisting

Bitcoin is trading around $82,800 after rising 1.5% in the past 24 hours, while Michael Saylor’s Strategy faces uncertainty over its eligibility for certain MSCI equity indexes. Meanwhile, Indonesia is dealing with a separate MSCI classification review that has unsettled its stock market. These developments have sparked debate over whether selling pressure on equities could eventually affect Bitcoin through changes in investor sentiment and corporate demand.

On October 15, 2026, MSCI initiated a consultation on potentially reclassifying Indonesia from an emerging market to a standalone market. The organization cited concerns about market accessibility, transparency in share ownership, and regulatory enforcement. The Jakarta Composite Index dropped below IDR 5,000 after triggering a circuit breaker on Friday, then declined another 5.2% when trading opened today.

MSCI has not yet finalized any reclassification of Indonesia. The consultation will continue until April 30, 2027, with a final decision expected by June 30. Some index-related changes have already been suspended during the review. Separately, MSCI has adopted eligibility criteria that could affect investment-holding companies such as Strategy and Metaplanet.

MSCI is expected to identify potentially affected companies on November 11, with any subsequent index changes potentially taking place after November 30. A Reuters estimate suggests Strategy could face approximately $2.8 billion in potential share outflows. The implications for Bitcoin depend largely on whether the pressure affects Strategy’s financing options or weakens confidence in corporate Bitcoin holdings.

Indonesia’s Stock Market Faces Mounting Pressure

Indonesia’s equity market has suffered a significant decline, prompting criticism of billionaire businessman Haji Isam following his acquisition of Bayan Resources (BYAN). The Jakarta Composite Index fell 14.91% during the week ending October 16 as MSCI considered shifting Indonesia from emerging-market to standalone-market status.

Some analysts believe the Bayan Resources deal may have added to foreign investors’ concerns about transparency and market integrity. Bhima Yudhistira, executive director of CELIOS, highlighted the acquisition while discussing MSCI’s proposed classification change.

Bhima raised concerns about the transaction’s transparency and the protection of minority shareholders, arguing that it exposed weaknesses in Indonesia’s capital-market oversight. Bloomberg Technoz also reported that the deal may have damaged international investors’ perceptions of the Indonesian market.

Through PT Jhonlin Baratama, Haji Isam purchased approximately 30.25% of Bayan Resources from Low Tuck Kwong and Elaine Low in a transaction reportedly valued at around Rp26 trillion. The financing structure also drew attention after shares in Haji Isam-linked companies Jhonlin Agro Raya and Pradiksi Gunatama were pledged to Bank Mandiri, a state-owned financial institution.

MSCI’s concerns are broader than the Bayan transaction. The index provider has identified unclear ownership structures, suspected coordinated trading, and insufficient evidence of effective regulatory enforcement as issues affecting Indonesia’s equity market. It has not publicly blamed Haji Isam’s acquisition for the proposed reclassification.

Nevertheless, the timing of the deal has intensified scrutiny of concentrated ownership and opaque transactions, particularly as international investors reassess their exposure to Indonesian stocks.

The situation has also renewed debate over the country’s market governance. Without measurable improvements in transparency and enforcement, Indonesia could face further foreign capital withdrawals.

Could Strategy’s MSCI Risk Spill Over Into Bitcoin?

Bitcoin’s price ranged from $80,900 to $82,900 over the past 24 hours, leaving it close to the upper end of its trading range. The $80,700 level remains an important nearby support reference, while resistance sits between $82,500 and $82,900.

A sustained break above this resistance zone could strengthen the recovery, whereas a rejection followed by a decline below support could renew bearish pressure.

Bitcoin’s daily advance offers some encouragement, but the broader market outlook remains uncertain. Institutional investment flows continue to influence price movements, making spot Bitcoin ETF activity an important measure of demand.

Strategy’s possible MSCI exclusion does not necessarily mean the company will immediately sell Bitcoin. The more relevant question is whether the potential index changes could weaken its stock price, restrict its access to capital, or reduce its ability to continue accumulating BTC.

Indonesia’s market decline shows how index-related decisions can trigger sharp repricing when investors become concerned about market structure and transparency. However, the proposed reclassification of Indonesia and the potential exclusion of Strategy from certain equity indexes are separate events with different consequences.

If index funds are required to reduce their Strategy holdings, the resulting selling pressure could weigh on the company’s share price. A lower valuation could make issuing additional shares less attractive, potentially complicating one of Strategy’s financing methods for purchasing Bitcoin.

The primary risk to the crypto market is therefore indirect. If Strategy faces greater difficulty raising capital, its future Bitcoin purchases could slow, reducing a potential source of additional demand. Negative sentiment surrounding Strategy could also influence investor perceptions of other publicly traded companies that hold Bitcoin on their balance sheets.

For now, Bitcoin’s short-term outlook remains cautiously positive following its 1.5% gain, although resistance and unresolved macroeconomic risks continue to limit confidence. If investors perceive fewer opportunities in established cryptocurrencies, some may shift their attention toward newer crypto projects with higher potential returns and greater risk.
