Bitcoin Sale Fears Grow as MARA Moves 1,000 BTC to Exchanges

Wallets associated with MARA Holdings have transferred 1,000 BTC, worth approximately $82.8 million, to Binance and Gate over a five-day period, raising questions about whether the Bitcoin miner intends to sell part of its reserves. Blockchain analytics platform Lookonchain flagged the transactions as the second significant MARA-linked Bitcoin movement it has tracked in October.

On-chain data shows transfers involving addresses linked to Galaxy Digital, Binance, and Gate. Earlier this month, 996 BTC worth around $81.13 million moved to an address associated with Galaxy Digital. Lookonchain reported that transaction on October 9, and the latest exchange deposits have renewed speculation about MARA’s Bitcoin treasury strategy.

The transactions have caught traders’ attention as they assess whether a major mining company could be preparing to introduce more Bitcoin into the market. However, wallet associations alone do not establish that MARA directly initiated the transfers or that the Bitcoin has been sold.

MARA’s Latest Bitcoin Transfer Represents 2.8% of Its Holdings

MARA reported holding 35,577 BTC at the end of June, including 9,270 BTC that had been lent out or pledged as collateral. Compared with that disclosed balance, the recent 1,000 BTC movement represents approximately 2.8% of the company’s reported holdings.

Although the amount is substantial, transferring Bitcoin to an exchange does not necessarily indicate an immediate sale. The assets could be moved for other operational or financial reasons, and confirmation is needed before concluding that the company has liquidated any of them.

MARA has sold Bitcoin in the past to meet its financial objectives. During the second quarter, the company sold 2,213 BTC at an average price of $73,078. In March, it disposed of another 15,133 BTC to help fund repurchases of convertible debt.

The company has also indicated that it may sell Bitcoin opportunistically when circumstances warrant. This policy makes another sale possible, but it does not confirm that the recently transferred 1,000 BTC has been sold.

The distinction matters because exchange deposits and completed sales have different implications for market supply. Without evidence of an actual disposal, the potential impact on Bitcoin prices remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, spot Bitcoin ETF flows offer another measure of investor demand. Continued outflows from these funds could add to concerns about whether buyers can absorb additional supply from miners and other large Bitcoin holders.

Bitcoin Recovers Above $83,000 as Traders Monitor Supply Risks

Bitcoin recently climbed above $83,000, posting a 1.5% gain over 24 hours. Despite the rebound, the cryptocurrency remained below its October 1 level. Thinner liquidity, weaker ETF demand, and geopolitical uncertainty continue to influence market sentiment, potentially increasing sensitivity to large Bitcoin movements.

Traditional financial markets showed mixed performance. Brent crude dropped more than 2.2% to $107.95 after reaching $110, while Nasdaq 100 futures rose 1% and S&P 500 futures gained 0.7%.

Bitcoin’s recovery has provided some relief, but traders are still watching whether potential selling by mining companies could overwhelm demand and put renewed pressure on prices.

MARA’s third-quarter results could provide further information about whether any of the transferred Bitcoin was sold. Until the company confirms a disposal or verifiable evidence establishes that the coins were liquidated, the transactions should be described as exchange inflows that have fueled selling speculation rather than proof of a completed Bitcoin sale.
