Sony’s Soneium blockchain ecosystem is preparing to launch its native coin, SONEIUM, on October 26, as the company expands its Web3 strategy around entertainment intellectual property (IP). The initiative aims to connect creators, developers, fans, and investors through blockchain-based economic opportunities.
Soneium already supports more than 250 applications spanning gaming, music, anime, films, collectibles, and fan-made content. Its next phase will focus on tokenizing intellectual property, potentially giving creators and rights holders new ways to raise capital while allowing fans to support the entertainment properties they enjoy.
The first project planned for the initiative is Moriusa, a character IP developed by Tokyo-based entertainment group Super State Holdings. Soneium also intends to work with K-pop intellectual property company DayOneDream to tokenize royalties from concert-related businesses.
These plans illustrate Soneium’s ambition to bring entertainment brands and their communities closer together through new financial models.
Rather than concentrating solely on crypto trading, the platform aims to create an economy around the commercial value of creative works. Its proposed products include IP Vault, which would provide indirect exposure to entertainment investment opportunities, and IP Bond, a bond offering backed by entertainment businesses.
The announcement also raises questions about whether blockchain technology could eventually extend into gaming platforms such as PlayStation and major franchises like Grand Theft Auto VI.
Could Soneium Connect Crypto With PlayStation and GTA 6?
PlayStation is a natural point of interest given Sony’s significant presence in gaming. GTA 6 is also expected to rank among the biggest entertainment releases of its generation, demonstrating the commercial reach of major gaming intellectual property.
This has fueled speculation about whether blockchain could eventually give players and fans opportunities to participate in gaming-related economies beyond buying games and digital content.
Soneium’s proposed infrastructure is designed to make IP ownership records, licensing, attribution, and royalty payments programmable on-chain. In principle, these capabilities could support authorized digital collectibles, officially licensed fan projects, and alternative funding arrangements for entertainment ventures.
For the gaming industry, such technology could create opportunities for fans to support independent developers or participate in licensed entertainment projects through tokenized assets.
However, no direct integration between SONEIUM, PlayStation, and GTA 6 has been confirmed. Sony’s announcement does not establish that the token will be incorporated into PlayStation games, nor does it indicate that Rockstar Games plans to add blockchain functionality to GTA 6.
Soneium Puts Creator Funding at the Center of Its Vision
A Soneium executive said the platform intends to help creators finance future projects at a greater scale while encouraging new forms of expression and deeper connections with audiences.
This approach focuses on changing how creative projects obtain funding and generate revenue. Tokenized intellectual property could enable creators to seek financial support from their communities, while programmable mechanisms could distribute earnings according to established agreements.
Soneium is also developing an Onchain IP Architecture featuring an IP Registry, an IP Graph, and an IP Execution Layer. These components are intended to connect creative works with their ownership information, licensing conditions, and revenue-sharing arrangements.
The system could become increasingly useful as artificial intelligence makes digital content easier to produce, modify, and remix. Linking creative assets to licensing terms and payment rules could help creators and rights holders manage how their work is used.
By combining entertainment financing, digital ownership, and programmable licensing, Soneium is pursuing a broader strategy than that of a conventional gaming token.
Whether this initiative eventually extends to PlayStation or blockbuster franchises such as GTA 6 remains unclear. For now, the focus is on building blockchain infrastructure that connects entertainment intellectual property with creators, investors, and fans.
