Binance Withdrawals Spike to FTX-Like Levels Without Triggering Crypto Liquidity Stress

Binance is dealing with billions of dollars in customer withdrawals following its record $6.3 billion security breach, reviving concerns about a possible repeat of the FTX collapse in November 2022. However, the exchange’s substantial asset reserves and commitment to covering the stolen funds indicate that the current situation may be far less severe than the liquidity disaster that destroyed FTX.

During the first nine and a half hours after reopening its services on November 1, Binance processed $4.65 billion in withdrawals, while deposits reached $1.01 billion. This resulted in net outflows of approximately $3.64 billion. However, its October 28 Proof of Reserves disclosure showed $171 billion in total assets, meaning the withdrawal wave represented only around 2.1% of its reported holdings.

Binance has also outlined its financial response to the exploit, stating that it had allocated more than $6.34 billion to address the incident, including $5 billion in affected tokens. Furthermore, the exchange revealed that its partners had frozen roughly $3 billion associated with the attack.

Binance Withdrawals Recall FTX’s Collapse, but the Financial Risks Differ

The scale of Binance’s withdrawals has raised comparisons with FTX, although the two situations involve fundamentally different financial circumstances.

FTX collapsed after a liquidity crisis exposed missing customer funds and problematic financial links with Alameda Research. Binance, meanwhile, has promised to cover the losses resulting from the hack instead of transferring the financial burden to its customers.

Bitcoin’s performance following the latest breach also highlights the difference between the two events. BTC briefly slipped toward $76,700 after the Binance incident but recovered toward $79,000 while maintaining support above $75,000.

The aftermath of FTX was significantly more damaging for the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin declined nearly 10% on November 8, 2022, as concerns about the exchange’s financial position intensified. The following day, BTC plunged another 14.4%, closing around $15,877 after briefly touching $15,632.

Although Binance’s exploit triggered substantial withdrawals, widespread liquidations, and uncertainty across the market, Bitcoin has not experienced a comparable chain reaction of selling.

The cryptocurrency’s ability to hold above $75,000 indicates that investors may be distinguishing between an exchange suffering a major security breach and a platform facing a systemic liquidity shortfall.

Binance’s $4 Billion Regulatory Settlement Offers Another Test of Its Resilience

The exchange has previously overcome significant financial and regulatory challenges. In November 2023, Binance agreed to pay more than $4 billion to settle investigations by U.S. authorities into anti-money laundering deficiencies and sanctions violations.

Founder Changpeng Zhao also pleaded guilty to failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program. He subsequently stepped down as CEO and paid a separate $50 million penalty.

Despite the settlement and leadership changes, Binance retained its position as the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. The latest hack now presents another challenge to its financial resources, security infrastructure, and ability to maintain customer confidence.

The wider cryptocurrency market has also absorbed the impact of the breach. Bitcoin and Ethereum declined, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded substantial outflows, and leveraged traders faced significant liquidations. However, both major cryptocurrencies managed to recover part of their losses after reaching their respective lows.

Will Binance Manage to Stabilize Customer Withdrawals?

Attention is now shifting toward whether withdrawal activity will gradually normalize as Binance updates its Proof of Reserves disclosures and completes its security investigation.

The similarities with FTX highlight the level of concern among cryptocurrency investors, but withdrawal volumes alone do not establish that Binance faces the same financial problems. The exchange has resumed its services, continued processing customer withdrawals, and pledged to absorb the losses associated with the exploit.

November has once again reminded the crypto industry of the turmoil surrounding FTX in 2022. Nevertheless, Binance’s ability to handle billions of dollars in outflows while maintaining operations could demonstrate how much stronger the industry’s response mechanisms have become since that collapse.
