Benchmark: Coinbase’s Soft Q2 Is a Temporary Setback, Not a Structural Concern

Benchmark Sees Coinbase Dip as a Buying Opportunity Despite Q2 Miss

Benchmark remains bullish on Coinbase (COIN) despite last week’s sharp decline, viewing the weakness following its Q2 earnings as a chance to buy into long-term growth.

Shares of the Nasdaq-listed exchange fell 16.7% on Friday after posting weaker-than-expected second-quarter results, but rebounded slightly Monday morning, up 1.8% in early trading. Still, Benchmark analyst Mark Palmer reiterated a Buy rating and maintained his $421 price target, saying the company’s broader investment thesis remains strong.

“Coinbase is building critical infrastructure for the crypto economy, and short-term volatility doesn’t change that,” Palmer wrote.

Benchmark outlined five key catalysts supporting its view:

  1. Stablecoin Upside via USDC: Coinbase’s revenue-sharing deal with Circle positions it to benefit from rising USDC adoption, especially following the passage of the GENIUS Act, which formalizes oversight of stablecoins.
  2. Institutional Expansion: Its suite of institutional products—prime brokerage, derivatives, and crypto-as-a-service—could gain momentum as the recently passed CLARITY Act brings more regulatory certainty.
  3. All-in-One Crypto App: Coinbase is developing a U.S.-first “super app” for digital assets, combining trading, payments, NFTs, DeFi tools, and developer resources under one umbrella.
  4. DEX Integration: The exchange’s push into decentralized trading will expand token availability beyond what’s listed on centralized platforms, boosting user engagement.
  5. Strong July Rebound: Benchmark estimates July transaction revenue at $360 million, up 44% from Q2’s monthly average—an encouraging sign of market re-engagement.

Despite the Q2 miss, Benchmark sees no change to the underlying growth trajectory. With new products, supportive legislation, and a resurgence in crypto activity, the firm believes Coinbase remains well-positioned for long-term upside.
