Bitcoin Backwardation Reappears, a Signal Often Linked to Market Lows

Bitcoin Enters Backwardation, a Rare Signal Often Seen Near Market Bottoms

Bitcoin has moved into backwardation, a market structure in which futures trade below the spot price, typically signaling stress, “extreme fear,” or heavy hedging activity. The shift comes as BTC has fallen roughly 30% from its all-time high.

Thomas Young, Managing Partner at RUMJog Enterprises, noted on X that this setup is rare in bitcoin and often marks a point where contrarian investors may consider taking the other side of the trade. “Backwardation doesn’t happen often, and when it does, it usually signals stress, forced de-risking, or short-term capitulation,” Young said. He added that markets often follow one of two paths from this point: a reversal as panic subsides or a final flush, which can also mark the bottom of the move.

Historically, backwardation has aligned with key market lows. It appeared in November 2022 during the FTX collapse, coinciding with bitcoin’s $15,000 cycle low. It resurfaced in March 2023 when BTC briefly fell below $20,000 amid the SVB collapse and USDC depeg, before rebounding sharply. Another instance occurred in August 2023 when Grayscale ETF news drove prices toward $25,000, marking a short-term bottom and a quick reversal.

The three-month futures annualized rolling basis has now dropped to around 4%, its lowest level since November 2022. This metric measures the annualized return from buying spot bitcoin while selling a three-month futures contract, a trade typically yielding low-risk profits. Futures usually trade at a premium, reflecting strong demand for leveraged long exposure. In bullish periods, this premium can surge; it reached as high as 27% in March 2024 when bitcoin hit $73,000.

The sharp compression in the basis indicates a dramatic decline in demand for forward exposure, signaling a cautious market, softer risk appetite, and digestion of the recent drawdown. While periods of extreme optimism push the curve into steep contango, bitcoin typically trades in a mild contango structure under normal conditions.
