Bitcoin hovered around $86,000 in European trading Wednesday as gains across the crypto market began to narrow. BTC traded at $86,379, up 0.24% since midnight UTC and 1.3% over the past 24 hours. Daily trading volume, however, fell 36% to $38 billion.
The CoinDesk 100 rose 0.67% to 1,926.99, despite 38 of its 100 constituents trading lower on the day. Over a 24-hour period, 87 constituents remained higher and 13 were lower, indicating that much of the broader advance occurred earlier.
XRP was among the stronger large-cap tokens, gaining 3.3% to $1.62. Bitcoin Cash added 2% to $351.59, while Ether slipped 0.089% to $2,750.24. Chainlink was almost unchanged.
Brent crude dropped below $100 to $99.13, its first move under that level since Sept. 9, after trading near $108 earlier this month. The decline came as markets responded to renewed hopes for progress in U.S.-Iran talks. A Qatari mediator was meeting U.S. officials in New York, while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was scheduled to address the U.N. General Assembly.
Gold declined 0.85% to $4,321 and silver dropped 2.2% to $65.53. The dollar index gained 0.21% to 100.76, while U.S. stock futures were little changed.
Derivatives Show More Defensive Positioning
Crypto futures volume decreased 21% to $227 billion over 24 hours, while open interest increased 1% to $159.4 billion. Taker shorts accounted for 51% of volume, marking the first time in more than a week that short activity exceeded longs.
The divergence between falling volume and rising open interest, combined with heavier short positioning, suggests traders are becoming more cautious following the recent rally.
Binance’s USDT margin borrowing rate stood at 5.49%, slightly below last week’s 5.52% and still the highest level since October. Elevated borrowing costs can make leveraged positions more expensive.
Bitcoin also slipped below $86,000 without a corresponding increase in open interest. OI remained near Tuesday’s 710,000 BTC, pointing more toward existing positions being reduced than a major wave of new shorts.
Whale positioning weakened as well. Binance’s whale long/short account ratio fell below 0.98, while the position ratio declined to 1.97 from more than 2.3. Ratios on OKX and Bybit were around 1, suggesting large traders were closer to neutral.
XRP futures open interest climbed for a second day to 2.50 billion tokens, the highest level since Aug. 20. Most of the increase occurred during the earlier price advance rather than the move from $1.69 to $1.59. Coinglass characterized Binance whale positioning in XRP as “extremely bearish.”
BCH Rally Driven by Futures Launch
Bitcoin Cash was the standout among major cryptocurrencies after CME announced BCH futures alongside Uniswap futures. BCH surged more than 30% over 24 hours to $351.59 and was up 2% since midnight UTC.
Open interest in BCH increased roughly 7% to its highest level since Aug. 22, while annualized funding reached 8%. BCH also posted the strongest positive 24-hour OI-adjusted CVD among major tokens, suggesting the move was accompanied by fresh long positioning.
Other tokens showed signs of crowded leverage. NEAR funding reached 43% annualized, while BTW funding exceeded 100%, indicating traders were paying substantial rates to maintain long positions.
Deribit’s DVOL was around 38%, placing it near the 23rd percentile of its annual range. The exchange said implied volatility remains relatively cheap compared with the strength of recent spot-market momentum.
In Bitcoin options, call open interest was concentrated around $90,000, $95,000 and $100,000, with much of the exposure structured through condors and butterflies. Open interest at $75,000 and below suggests traders are also focused on lower price levels.
DeFi Leads Mixed Altcoin Session
Altcoins delivered uneven results. BONK gained 14% since midnight and 17% over 24 hours, while PENGU rose 8.3% and 20%. The broader CoinDesk Memecoin Index, however, declined 0.31% on the day. SPX6900 fell 1.1%, PEPE lost 1% and PUMP dropped 1.9%.
LayerZero rose 22% over 24 hours to $1.44, while The Graph gained 14%. Much of both tokens’ gains came earlier in the 24-hour period.
The DeFi Select Index advanced 0.83% on the day and 9.6% over 24 hours, making it the strongest CoinDesk index group. Aave traded at $151.18, while Aerodrome Finance gained 6.1%.
On the downside, Worldcoin fell 3%, Polkadot declined 2.9% and Jito dropped 2.8%. Jito was also down 0.16% over 24 hours, underscoring the uneven distribution of gains across the broader crypto market.
