
- Ethereum developers are narrowing down the 66 proposals under consideration for Hegotá, the blockchain’s next major upgrade, with privacy emerging as one of the key areas of development.
- One proposal could give privacy applications more functionality directly at the Ethereum protocol level, reducing their dependence on external infrastructure.
- Ethereum’s public design means wallet addresses, balances and transaction histories can be viewed by anyone. That transparency can be problematic for businesses managing payroll or treasury operations and for users who want greater financial privacy.
- Privacy solutions are currently handled mainly by applications built on top of Ethereum. The Hegotá proposals would shift some of the supporting functionality into the network itself.
- One of the most notable proposals is Frame Transactions, or EIP-8141. It would allow accounts to determine how transactions are authorized, executed and paid for instead of requiring users to follow a single transaction model.
- If adopted, the change could allow wallets to have third parties pay fees, group several operations into one transaction or change the cryptographic method used for authorization without requiring a new account.
- Ethereum Foundation researcher and EIP-8141 co-author Toni Wahrstätter outlined the proposal as developers began deciding which changes should remain in Hegotá.
- Developers are currently evaluating 66 proposals and will narrow that list during upcoming core developer meetings. The surviving proposals will need to pass implementation and testing stages before having a realistic chance of being deployed in 2027.
- Ethereum privacy applications already use cryptographic proofs to conceal transaction information, but submitting those transactions to the blockchain can require additional services. Some applications rely on relayers, which submit transactions on users’ behalf.
- Frame Transactions is being considered alongside two other proposals that could strengthen the same privacy infrastructure. Hegotá is expected to follow the Glamsterdam upgrade and is currently targeted for 2027.
- EIP-8250, known as Keyed Nonces, would allow transactions from the same account to use independent counters. This could prevent one delayed transaction from blocking other transactions waiting behind it.
- EIP-8272 would allow transactions to verify themselves against a recent cryptographic record, reducing their dependence on information that could change before execution.
- Taken together, the proposals could make privacy applications less dependent on outside services while giving developers more flexibility within Ethereum itself.
- The proposals would not turn Ethereum into a private blockchain. Transactions between standard addresses would remain publicly visible, with privacy still handled at the application level.
- Frame Transactions has not yet been approved for the upgrade. Its inclusion remains subject to further developer review and testing.
- The only proposal approved so far is FOCIL, which is designed to reduce transaction censorship. It would allow a group of network participants to establish a list of transactions that block builders are required to include.
- Other Hegotá proposals seek to increase block-production speed, adjust validator rewards and strengthen Ethereum’s defenses against potential quantum-computing threats.
- The deadline for submitting new proposals ended Aug. 6. Developers will use the next several core meetings to determine which changes ultimately make the final Hegotá upgrade.
