Shiba Inu Soars 36% With South Korea Emerging as Key Buying Force

The surge appears to be largely unexplained, with no formal announcement behind it, minimal movement among other dog-themed tokens, and most of the trading volume concentrated on South Korean platforms.

Shiba Inu jumped 36% on Sunday to about $0.0000057, adding nearly $1 billion to its market capitalization in a single day despite no clear catalyst.

The token now holds a market value of roughly $3.4 billion, supported by close to $380 million in daily trading volume — its strongest activity level in months.

There have been no meaningful developments from Shibarium, the project’s layer-2 network, and the broader memecoin sector has lagged. Dogecoin rose only 6% over the same period, while smaller tokens gained up to 10%, indicating the rally is largely specific to SHIB rather than part of a wider trend.

South Korean demand stands out. The SHIB/KRW pair on Upbit is the largest market, generating about $62 million in volume — over 10% of global trading — and trades at a slight premium compared to Binance and other dollar-based exchanges.

Traders in South Korea are known for driving sharp, sentiment-fueled rallies in volatile assets, and SHIB’s price action follows that pattern: an initial spike late Saturday, a period of sideways movement, then another push during Asian trading hours.

Short sellers were caught off guard, with around $6 million in SHIB and 1000SHIB positions liquidated across roughly 2,300 traders. About $5 million of those were short positions, with the largest wave occurring during the second leg of the rally. Still, these liquidations appear to have followed the upward move rather than caused it and are too small to fully explain the scale of the surge.

Shiba Inu was launched in August 2020 as an Ethereum-based token created by the anonymous developer Ryoshi, promoted as a “Dogecoin killer” without a defined product.

Since then, the project has introduced Shibarium, a layer-2 network, and expanded its ecosystem. Even so, SHIB remains far below its 2021 peak and continues to trade largely on retail sentiment rather than underlying fundamentals.
