Donald Trump’s TRUMP meme coin surged to almost a $15 billion market cap before retreating as its initial wave of online hype began to disappear. Hunter Biden is now entering the meme-coin arena with LAPTOP, a token scheduled to launch on September 9 and named after the controversial laptop story that became a major political flashpoint ahead of the 2020 election.
LAPTOP is being positioned as a humorous counterpoint to Trump’s crypto ventures. The project takes a politically sensitive chapter involving the Biden family and turns it into a tradable digital asset. As part of its strategy, the team plans to airdrop tokens to selected wallets belonging to traders who lost money on TRUMP.
Hunter Biden has promoted the project through a video compilation showing conservative politicians and commentators discussing the laptop controversy. The montage also features clips of Trump using language that has frequently appeared in conservative criticism of the Biden family.
While the political history provides the token with its identity and viral appeal, its proposed tokenomics have become a significant point of contention among traders before the first LAPTOP trade takes place.
Investors Question LAPTOP’s Distribution Model
The project intends to issue 1 billion LAPTOP tokens and launch them on Base. The planned supply is divided among founder holdings, airdrops, conditional burns, charitable allocations and launch expenses.
Founders, including Hunter Biden, are expected to hold 30% of the total supply. A separate 20% has been set aside for an airdrop aimed at people who lost money on TRUMP and other selected recipients.
The planned recipients also include Hunter Biden’s Substack subscribers and people on a mailing list maintained by Andrew Callaghan, the host of Channel 5.
Another 30% of the token supply is tied to conditions that could result in the tokens being destroyed. Reporting first published by The Wall Street Journal said the tokens could be burned if a Democrat wins the 2028 presidential election or if LAPTOP’s valuation overtakes TRUMP’s.
The remaining 20% is designated for charitable donations and expenses related to the launch.
The project has said that founder tokens will be subject to lockup and vesting provisions. A separate account has also been described as containing tokens connected to predictions involving politics, crypto and culture, with the outcome of those predictions determining whether the assets are burned or donated to charity.
Backlash Grows Before LAPTOP Goes Live
The planned launch has received a mixed response from the crypto community. Some traders have questioned whether LAPTOP is simply another celebrity-linked meme coin seeking to monetize public attention.
Andrew Callaghan attempted to distance himself from the project after his mailing list was included in the proposed airdrop. He said neither he nor his team participated in the project beyond supplying the subscriber list to help Hunter Biden reach a larger audience.
Kraken also removed a promotional LAPTOP post after traders criticized the exchange’s involvement in promoting the token.
Base representatives subsequently clarified that the blockchain network was not involved in developing or marketing LAPTOP. Base founder Jesse Pollak said the project had contacted his team, but Base ultimately chose not to participate in its design or promotion.
The controversy highlights the distinction between a token launching on a particular blockchain and receiving formal backing from the network or a major crypto company.
It also shows how quickly promotional posts, mailing lists and distribution arrangements can become sources of controversy when a meme coin is connected to a political figure.
LAPTOP’s Trading Debut Could Set the Tone
It remains impossible to know how the market will value LAPTOP once trading begins. Its connection to Hunter Biden, the notoriety of the laptop controversy and the planned distribution to certain TRUMP losers could generate significant interest, but actual demand will determine whether that attention translates into sustained value.
Traders will likely focus on the project’s token structure once the market opens, particularly the 30% founder allocation, the planned airdrop, the conditional burn mechanism and the funds designated for charity and launch expenses.
LAPTOP joins a growing group of politically themed meme coins whose appeal depends heavily on recognizable personalities and viral narratives.
By turning the Biden laptop controversy into the foundation of a cryptocurrency, the project is attempting to convert a long-running political story into a speculative digital asset. Whether that approach attracts lasting investor interest or intensifies concerns over celebrity-driven meme coins will depend on the market’s response after launch.
