XRP Ledger Expands AI Payment Support With Stripe-Owned Privy

The integration will allow applications and AI-powered software to pay for online services using XRP and RLUSD, although the extent to which the growing transaction numbers reflect meaningful economic activity remains unclear.

Ripple is integrating wallet technology from Stripe-owned Privy into the XRP Ledger, enabling financial applications and AI agents to create accounts, store cryptocurrencies and execute payments without requiring users to manage wallet software themselves.

According to a release shared with CoinDesk, developers will be able to incorporate wallets directly into their applications and authorize transfers involving XRP, Ripple’s dollar-pegged RLUSD stablecoin and other assets issued on the network.

The technology could help payment providers offer dollar-linked transfers without requiring customers to handle the private keys used to authorize transactions.

Privy manages the underlying wallet infrastructure, allowing developers to avoid building these systems independently. It also supports the export of private keys and recovery phrases, giving users the option to move their wallets to other platforms.

Businesses could use the integration to provide AI agents and automated bots with funded wallets to purchase digital services. Privy’s documentation notes that server-managed wallets enable software to hold and spend funds, including through x402, a payment standard that facilitates purchases of data and other online services.

For example, an AI agent seeking access to paid data can receive a payment request, approve the transaction and retrieve the information after payment verification. This enables software to pay for individual requests automatically without requiring a person to complete each checkout.

CoinDesk contacted the XRP Ledger Foundation to ask which applications are using the integration and whether data is available on the share of network payment activity generated by AI agents.

The announcement comes as developers report a substantial increase in automated payments on the XRP Ledger.

Last week, RippleX Head of Engineering J. Ayo Akinyele said on X that the network had processed more than 13 million agent payments through x402, accounting for approximately 25% of ledger activity.

Data from the XRPL AI Hub, operated by payments infrastructure developer t54, showed that cumulative transactions had surpassed 14.3 million across 169 registered merchants as of Wednesday.

However, the overall value of these transactions remains relatively small compared with their volume.

The dashboard recorded approximately 6,991 XRP and 12,752 RLUSD in cumulative payments. These figures suggest that many transactions involve very small sums, consistent with software paying for individual requests rather than processing large financial transfers.

Ripple introduced developer tools for AI-driven payments in June, allowing agents to create wallets, check balances and purchase services using XRP or RLUSD. In September, the company expanded the toolkit to support a payment standard developed by Stripe and payments blockchain Tempo. The update also enabled developers to fund repeated requests with XRP instead of settling each payment separately.

In Tuesday’s announcement, the companies said they intend to expand the integration with additional features, including policy-based spending controls and tools to cover users’ network fees.

However, creating a wallet within an application does not eliminate the need to fund it before transactions can take place.

Privy’s documentation states that a newly created XRP Ledger account must receive the network’s minimum reserve of 1 XRP to become active. Therefore, someone must supply the initial XRP even if the account is intended exclusively for sending dollar-pegged stablecoins such as RLUSD.
