CME Launches First XRP and Solana Options Trades
The CME Group’s new options linked to XRP and Solana (SOL) futures went live Monday, with initial trades executed by leading market participants including Wintermute, Galaxy, Cumberland DRW, and SuperState.
Traders can now access options on SOL, Micro SOL, XRP, and Micro XRP futures, with daily, monthly, and quarterly expiries. Options are derivative contracts that give the holder the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell the underlying asset at a predetermined price at a future date. Call options confer the right to buy, while put options grant the right to sell.
The launch expands CME’s existing cryptocurrency product suite, which includes standard and micro futures for XRP, SOL, Bitcoin, and Ether. Crypto options have seen significant growth in recent years, driven by institutional demand for efficient risk management and hedging strategies.
“As the crypto market matures, participants are increasingly looking to manage exposure and explore opportunities across a wider range of instruments,” said Giovanni Vicioso, Global Head of Cryptocurrency Products at CME Group. “With the deep liquidity we’ve built in Solana and XRP futures, these new options give traders additional tools to enhance their investment and hedging strategies. Early support from clients has been encouraging.”
The first Solana options trade occurred Monday as a block trade between Cumberland DRW and Galaxy. “Cumberland is thrilled to facilitate the first block trade for SOL options, highlighting growing demand for more ways to trade digital assets,” said Roman Makarov, Head of Cumberland Options Trading at DRW. “Institutional participants are clearly seeking greater choice and depth in crypto markets, which will continue to drive innovation.”
The first XRP options trade was executed as a block trade on Sunday, October 12, between Wintermute and SuperState. “The debut of XRP options on CME helps manage and hedge digital asset exposure within strategies like the Superstate Crypto Carry fund,” said Saahith Pochiraju, Portfolio Manager at SuperState.
