Quantum-resistant cryptocurrencies are seeing a surge in demand as investors shift toward assets perceived to offer stronger long-term protection against emerging technological threats. The move follows a new research update from Google’s quantum computing division, sparking fresh concerns about the future security of widely used blockchain systems.
Major tokens like bitcoin and ether have remained relatively subdued over the past 24 hours, registering only minor gains. In contrast, cryptocurrencies associated with post-quantum cryptography have delivered outsized returns, with several jumping more than 50%. The trend highlights how quickly markets are beginning to price in potential risks, even if they remain largely theoretical.
The catalyst stems from Google’s Quantum AI team, which indicated that breaking the elliptic-curve cryptography securing Bitcoin could require fewer than 500,000 qubits—significantly below earlier expectations. This has led some analysts to identify the end of the decade, around 2029, as a possible window for the crypto industry to upgrade its security standards.
The research also suggested that a sufficiently advanced quantum computer could compromise Bitcoin’s defenses within minutes. Separate findings have pointed to vulnerabilities in Ethereum, outlining multiple attack scenarios that could put substantial value at risk across decentralized finance and tokenized assets.
While such quantum capabilities are not yet available, the market’s reaction suggests investors are increasingly forward-looking in assessing these risks.
In the past 24 hours, projects focused on quantum-resistant or advanced cryptographic frameworks have attracted significant interest. Quantum Resistant Ledger (QRL) and Cellframe (CEL) have each surged around 50%, while Abelian (ABEL) has gained roughly 25%. Qubic (QUBIC) and QANplatform (QANX) have also posted gains, alongside a rise in privacy-focused Zcash (ZEC).
Collectively, this segment—comprising around 20 tokens—has seen its market capitalization climb to approximately $4.66 billion, reflecting growing attention toward “future-proof” crypto assets. Although Zcash is not fully quantum-resistant, its use of sophisticated cryptography and ongoing research into post-quantum solutions keeps it closely tied to this narrative.
Even though the threat remains theoretical, its influence on market behavior has been building. Some analysts believe concerns about quantum risks have already impacted Bitcoin’s relative performance. Capriole Investments founder Charles Edwards has argued that such concerns contributed to Bitcoin’s underperformance against traditional markets in the latter half of 2025.
Notably, that same period coincided with a dramatic rally in Zcash, which surged more than 1,200% to reach a high near $744—underscoring how quickly capital can rotate toward themes centered on long-term technological resilience.
