- Technology and crypto executives met with President Donald Trump ahead of the CFTC’s inaugural Innovation Advisory Committee meeting, which is set to focus on emerging financial technologies.
- Trump called on Congress Wednesday to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, saying lawmakers must “take the next step” to move the crypto market structure bill forward.
- At the White House event, Trump was joined by executives from Coinbase, Gemini, Ripple, Chainlink Labs and other crypto firms. He urged lawmakers to agree on a “fair version” of the Clarity Act as negotiations over the Senate bill continue.
- Trump said the legislation would strengthen the US position against China and other global competitors while creating greater opportunities for new technologies and businesses.
- The meeting took place ahead of Thursday’s first session of the CFTC Innovation Advisory Committee. The panel includes senior executives from Kraken, Anchorage Digital, Grayscale and OKX, as well as leaders from prediction-market and AI companies.
Trump Seeks Crypto Industry Input
- Chainlink Labs CEO Sergey Nazarov said Trump later invited the executives to the Oval Office, where he asked for their collective views on the administration’s policy priorities.
- Nazarov said the Clarity Act was also discussed, including the steps required to turn the legislation into law.
- Trump and his advisers viewed the bill’s passage as realistic, Nazarov said, adding that the administration identified only a few remaining issues and several senators whose support would be necessary.
- Trump has remained central to the administration’s crypto push. The SEC introduced a major crypto rule proposal this week, while the Treasury Department has outlined its approach to stablecoins.
- At the same time, the Clarity Act remains caught in a Senate dispute over government ethics. Democratic negotiators have pushed for provisions addressing Trump’s crypto interests and potential conflicts involving senior officials.
Clarity Act Faces Crucial Senate Hurdle
- The bill could get another opportunity in the Senate next month before lawmakers enter a recess that may last until the November elections.
- Although the legislation is being prepared for a potential final vote, it has not yet shown whether it can secure the 60 votes required to pass the Senate.
- Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said the Clarity Act would help preserve the administration’s crypto policy achievements by creating a regulatory framework that could remain in place for decades.
- Armstrong called the bill a genuine bipartisan compromise and said lawmakers could get it across the finish line by working together.
SEC Backs Clarity Act Passage
- SEC Chairman Paul Atkins said the agency’s latest crypto proposal highlights the need for Congress to establish a permanent legal framework through the Clarity Act.
- Atkins told Trump that the SEC’s proposal would give crypto entrepreneurs and job creators more certainty when raising capital using digital assets in the US.
- He said congressional passage of the Clarity Act remains the SEC’s top priority and that the agency would continue supporting efforts to advance the bill.
Trump Keeps Crypto Leaders Close
- Trump has held several meetings with crypto executives since returning to office, including a major White House summit and a ceremony celebrating the signing of the GENIUS Act, which established rules for stablecoins.
- Nazarov said Wednesday’s meeting was notable for bringing together a broad mix of businesses, ranging from traditional financial firms and fintech companies to blockchain infrastructure providers.
- He said the industry needs to emphasize the broader economic and geopolitical importance of digital assets, particularly their potential impact on US financial leadership.
- Nazarov also argued that some critics underestimate the stakes surrounding the dollar’s global reserve-currency status. He praised the SEC and CFTC chairs for recognizing the importance of maintaining US competitiveness in global financial markets.
