Iran Deal News Shook Oil Markets 10 Times, but Bitcoin Rallied on 8

Since March, ten headlines about a potential Iran agreement have triggered Brent crude price swings of up to 15%, only for the reports to be disputed or collapse. Bitcoin, meanwhile, has rallied following eight of those developments.

Bitcoin advanced 2.19% to $83,105 on October 21 after an unverified report suggesting that the U.S. and Iran were close to an agreement pushed Brent crude down as much as 3.3% on Tuesday. A diplomat involved in the negotiations later denied the claim. The episode marks the tenth major Iran-related headline since March to shake oil markets before the initial narrative fell apart, while Bitcoin has risen after most of these events.

The latest reversal was substantial even by this year’s volatile market standards. Saxo’s morning note reported that Brent crude climbed above $111 per barrel on Tuesday, reaching a five-month high before retreating to settle at $108.79. By Wednesday morning, prices had recovered to around $110.40.

The repeated swings raise an important question: has Bitcoin become increasingly sensitive to oil market movements, despite trading as a separate asset?

The pattern emerged in early March. On March 9, President Donald Trump told CBS that the war was “pretty much complete.” Brent crude then fell from an intraday high of $119.50 to below $90 during Asian trading. However, the conflict continued for months. On April 17, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that the Strait of Hormuz was “completely open.” The Revolutionary Guards challenged his statement within hours and closed the waterway entirely the following day.

The relationship has also worked in reverse. On June 1, Iranian media reported that negotiations had ended, sending Brent crude up 4.5%. Just 16 days later, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding.

Bitcoin News: How BTC Reacts to Iran Deal Headlines

Bitcoin has generally gained when Iran-related reports suggest easing tensions. On the nine days when headlines indicated a possible peace agreement or the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, BTC closed higher on eight occasions, posting an average increase of 1.74%. On the only day when a headline pointed to further escalation, Bitcoin fell 3.08%.

Optimism has also faded when reports were challenged. Bitcoin dropped 1.79% the day after Araghchi’s statement about Hormuz and declined another 1.77% following the May 6 report.

The connection largely stems from expectations surrounding Federal Reserve policy. Elevated oil prices can intensify inflation, potentially forcing the Fed to maintain higher interest rates or consider further increases. U.S. consumer prices rose 3.7% year over year in September, while gasoline prices climbed 9.1% during the month. The Fed had also raised interest rates on September 16.

News suggesting progress toward an Iran deal can therefore support Bitcoin by raising expectations for lower oil prices, easing inflation and fewer rate hikes. When such reports are denied, those expectations can reverse quickly, weighing on risk assets.

There is no conclusive evidence that these reports are deliberately planted to manipulate markets. However, the price action highlights how unconfirmed reports from individual sources can move oil and Bitcoin simultaneously. Traders who react immediately may capture the initial move, while those entering later risk being caught on the wrong side of a reversal.

After ten such episodes, the message for Bitcoin traders is clear: wait for confirmation from both governments before trading headlines about a potential Iran agreement.
