Three Election Risks for Crypto: Trump’s $5,000 Payment Proposal, Iran and Policy Uncertainty

US Midterm Elections Could Trigger Three Major Crypto Market Risks, From Stimulus to Iran

Cryptocurrency investors are watching the November 3 US midterm elections closely as the results could influence Washington’s economic priorities, the future of digital asset regulation, and broader financial market sentiment.

Republicans are seeking to hold on to their congressional majorities, while Democrats are aiming to regain control of at least one chamber. The balance of power will determine how easily President Donald Trump can advance his policy agenda and whether his proposals encounter greater resistance in Congress.

For the crypto industry, three developments could have significant implications: Trump’s proposed $5,000 stimulus dividend, uncertainty surrounding the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act, and the escalating situation between the US and Iran.

The election is unlikely to change cryptocurrency fundamentals immediately. However, it could shift investor expectations around government spending, market liquidity, regulation, and risk appetite.

Trump’s $5,000 Dividend Could Strengthen Liquidity Expectations

Trump has proposed distributing a $5,000 dividend to adult Americans if Republicans maintain control of both the House and Senate. The plan could benefit around 240 million adults, potentially creating a bill of approximately $1.2 trillion. He has also suggested that tariff collections could help cover the cost.

If Republicans retain their congressional majorities, the administration may have a clearer path to pursue the proposal. Expectations of additional household income could encourage consumer spending and raise hopes for greater liquidity across financial markets.

Bitcoin investors have historically paid close attention to government stimulus and monetary conditions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, direct payments to Americans coincided with aggressive Federal Reserve easing and a sharp increase in cryptocurrency prices.

A Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland study reported that the 2020 stimulus payments lifted Bitcoin purchasing volume by 3.8%, although the resulting price effect was relatively limited.

The wider 2020–2021 crypto rally was also supported by low interest rates, expanding institutional participation, and substantial liquidity. Another large-scale payment program could encourage retail investors to increase their exposure to Bitcoin and other speculative assets.

However, the proposed dividend remains a political promise rather than an approved spending program. Higher inflation expectations or rising Treasury yields could undermine the potential benefit for cryptocurrencies. If Democrats gain control of Congress, the administration could face additional challenges in securing approval.

CLARITY Act’s Future Depends on Congressional Support

The midterm results could also influence the direction of the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act, which aims to establish a clearer regulatory framework for the US digital asset industry.

The legislation is intended to define how different cryptocurrencies should be regulated and clarify the responsibilities of US financial authorities. Its progress has stalled after it failed to advance through a Senate procedural vote in September.

Republicans retaining control of Congress could improve the bill’s prospects. Nevertheless, bipartisan backing would remain important for moving the legislation through the remaining stages.

A Democratic victory, particularly if the party takes control of the House, could bring closer examination of Trump’s crypto-related business activities and political connections. Increased congressional oversight and investigations could delay legislative discussions.

Still, a change in political control would not automatically lead to tougher cryptocurrency rules. Both parties have reasons to support greater regulatory certainty, although negotiations could produce a version of the legislation that differs from the existing proposal.

For crypto companies and investors, the election could therefore affect both the timing and the substance of future US regulatory decisions.

Iran Escalation Could Put Pressure on Crypto Regardless of Election Results

Geopolitical instability presents a separate challenge that could overshadow developments in Washington.

The United States carried out limited strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Islands, close to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The incident renewed concerns about a broader conflict, even as diplomatic contacts between the countries continued.

Any further escalation could weaken investor confidence and increase pressure on risk-sensitive markets. Cryptocurrencies could face selling pressure even if the election produces a political outcome viewed as favorable to the industry.

A Republican victory, combined with optimism over stimulus payments, progress on crypto legislation, and easing tensions with Iran, could provide a positive backdrop for Bitcoin and altcoins.

Conversely, a Democratic victory could create uncertainty around Trump’s policy agenda, while renewed military conflict could weigh on digital assets regardless of which party controls Congress.

Political Optimism May Not Be Enough to Drive a Crypto Rally

The midterm elections present a complicated outlook for the cryptocurrency market. Trump’s proposed $5,000 dividend could encourage expectations of stronger liquidity, while progress on the CLARITY Act could help reduce regulatory uncertainty.

However, both developments face obstacles. The proposed payments still require approval, and crypto legislation has yet to overcome its congressional hurdles.

Investors will also need to monitor inflation expectations, Treasury yields, and developments in the Middle East. These factors could have a more immediate effect on market conditions than the election result itself.

Ultimately, the key question is whether potential improvements in US economic and regulatory policy can outweigh geopolitical instability. The midterms may shape crypto’s political environment, but liquidity conditions and the Iran situation could prove more decisive for its next major market move.
