Ethereum Trader Turns $26M Unrealized Profit Into $716K Loss After Doubling Down on Short
An Ethereum (ETH) trader has captured the attention of on-chain analysts after a massive short position swung from enormous paper gains to a realized loss in just a few days.
On-chain data from Lookonchain shows that the wallet 0xCB92 opened a 50,000 ETH short on Hyperliquid, at one point sitting on over $26 million in unrealized profit.
Instead of closing the profitable trade, the trader doubled down, adding another 10,000 ETH to the short position—even as ETH’s price climbed higher. In short trading, traders bet on prices falling; when the asset rises, losses mount.
The strategy backfired. As ETH rallied, the position was liquidated, leaving the trader with a realized loss of $716,000 as of Thursday, according to Lookonchain.
It’s possible the position was intended as a hedge against a long position held elsewhere, but no other trades were visible in the tracked wallet, suggesting this was purely a directional bet.
Echoes of James Wynn’s Wild Ride
The incident is reminiscent of the notorious trading antics of James Wynn, whose bold positions have previously brought Hyperliquid into the spotlight.
In May 2025, Wynn famously built a record-setting $1.25 billion notional long position in bitcoin (BTC), entering at an average price of $108,243. But when Bitcoin dropped below $105,000 following U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff announcement on European Union exports, Wynn’s position crumbled.
Wynn faced multiple massive liquidations, including a 527 BTC position worth over $55 million and a 421 BTC stake valued near $44 million. Altogether, over $100 million of his holdings evaporated in just days, sparking speculation about whether his trading reflected extreme risk-taking—or outright gambling addiction.
Since the collapse, Wynn has avoided any trades on the scale of his May positions. Some market watchers now wonder whether wallet 0xCB92 could become the next trader to carry Hyperliquid’s high-stakes torch.
