Revolut Outage Disrupts Crypto Access and Payments After Google Cloud Incident
A service disruption at Revolut temporarily affected cryptocurrency access, card payments and bank transfers after technical problems hit Google Cloud’s London infrastructure. The British fintech said customer funds and personal data remained secure, although the incident highlighted the risks of relying on centralized platforms to access financial services.
The disruption started at 06:08 UTC when Google Cloud’s London-based europe-west2 region experienced technical issues. Revolut subsequently identified 27 services as partially unavailable or affected, including its cryptocurrency services. Other financial institutions and public services relying on the same cloud infrastructure also experienced disruptions.
Revolut worked to restore affected functions throughout the day. By 17:00 UTC, some services had resumed, although Reuters reported that most services listed on the company’s UK status page continued to show problems at that point. Revolut later confirmed that the affected services had been restored.
Revolut Disruption Highlights Crypto Access Risks
The incident underscores an important distinction for cryptocurrency users: owning digital assets does not always mean having uninterrupted access to them.
Revolut provides cryptocurrency trading through its centralized platform, requiring customers to rely on the company’s systems to check balances and execute trades. If those systems become unavailable, users may temporarily lose access to the interface they need to manage their holdings.
However, an interruption in access does not automatically mean that cryptocurrency has been lost. Revolut stated that customers’ funds and data remained safe throughout the incident. No verified evidence established that the disruption caused cryptocurrency theft or customer balance losses.
Nevertheless, downtime can have consequences during periods of market volatility. Users unable to access a trading platform may miss opportunities to buy, sell or adjust their positions. There has been no independent confirmation that Revolut customers experienced specific trading losses during this outage.
The incident also demonstrates how centralized financial services can be exposed to shared infrastructure failures. Although individual companies operate separate products, they may depend on the same cloud provider, meaning one technical problem can affect several organizations simultaneously.
Google Cloud said its engineering team was investigating the incident and would provide a more detailed account after completing its review.
Centralized Crypto Services Face Infrastructure Risks
The Revolut disruption highlights how cryptocurrency access can be interrupted even when the underlying blockchain remains operational.
A blockchain may continue processing transactions while a centralized exchange or financial application experiences downtime. Customers who depend on an intermediary can still be prevented from accessing their accounts or trading tools, regardless of the blockchain’s operational status.
Self-custody offers an alternative by allowing users to control their own private keys rather than relying entirely on a company’s account infrastructure. However, it comes with additional responsibilities, including safeguarding recovery phrases, verifying transaction details and understanding network fees. Self-custody also does not eliminate every dependence on external infrastructure.
For Revolut users, the immediate concern was service availability rather than any confirmed loss of funds. The company maintained that customer money and data were secure and subsequently reported that the affected services had been restored.
Cloud Dependencies Draw Greater Regulatory Attention
The incident also highlights the growing importance of technology providers within the financial system. As banks, payment applications and cryptocurrency services increasingly depend on shared cloud infrastructure, technical failures can have consequences that extend well beyond a single platform.
Reuters reported that UK authorities designated Google Cloud EMEA Limited as a critical third-party supplier to the financial sector in July 2026. European Union regulators have also identified major technology providers as critical dependencies for financial institutions.
Such designations reflect concerns about the potential impact of disruptions at technology companies that support multiple financial services.
The Revolut outage therefore raises a broader issue for the digital finance industry: even when individual firms maintain their own security and operational controls, their reliance on common infrastructure can create vulnerabilities across the sector.
For cryptocurrency users, the practical lesson is to monitor official service updates during disruptions, avoid assuming that an inaccessible balance means funds have disappeared, and understand how custody arrangements affect access to digital assets.
The incident did not establish that customer funds had been stolen or that blockchain networks had failed. Instead, it demonstrated how access to cryptocurrency and other financial services can depend on centralized technology infrastructure outside the user’s control.
