Mirae Asset is aiming to turn Korbit into a next-generation digital finance platform, with the South Korean crypto exchange set to be rebranded as Digital X as part of a wider plan to connect cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, and tokenized real-world assets.
The financial giant said the acquisition is not simply about gaining a larger share of Korea’s crypto market. Instead, Mirae wants to build an “intelligent investment platform” that combines research, financial insights, investor education, and digital asset services.
“We plan to strengthen investor education and research capabilities and develop Digital X into an intelligent investment platform where information, expertise, and advanced investment insights are seamlessly connected,” Mirae Asset said.
The company explained that the “X” in Digital X represents an unknown future and the opportunities created when different forms of value intersect through new financial technologies.
Mirae Asset Financial Group is one of Asia’s largest independent financial and asset management companies, with its total assets under management reportedly reaching approximately $1 trillion as of May.
A new digital asset ecosystem
Mirae’s plans extend far beyond changing Korbit’s name.
The firm wants to create an integrated investment network where real-world assets, security token offerings, stablecoins, traditional financial products, and digital assets can interact within a single platform. Rather than operating as a conventional crypto exchange, Digital X is intended to become a key infrastructure layer for the future digital economy.
Korbit currently represents less than 1% of South Korea’s crypto market, significantly behind market leaders Upbit and Bithumb. However, Mirae Asset said its goal is not to overtake competitors but to support the broader and sustainable growth of the digital asset sector.
The company plans to combine Mirae Asset’s global investment experience with Korbit’s crypto expertise to create a platform focused on institutional-grade services, research, and digital asset innovation.
In addition to trading capabilities, Digital X is expected to bring together investment analysis, educational resources, and financial infrastructure, creating a more comprehensive digital investment environment.
Mirae Asset also emphasized that the platform will maintain strict regulatory standards, including anti-money laundering (AML), know-your-customer (KYC), and fraud prevention measures. This approach highlights the company’s intention to attract institutional participants while continuing to serve retail investors.
Mirae Asset Consulting, a group affiliate, recently increased its ownership in Korbit to 97.15%, completing the acquisition after receiving clearance from South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission.
The company said the purchase was carried out through approved regulatory procedures after reviewing business objectives, strategic roles, and potential synergies within the digital asset industry.
Mirae Asset added that it has no immediate plans to acquire the remaining Korbit shares and will instead focus on strengthening Digital X’s capabilities and expanding its role in the evolving digital finance market.
