Monad Moves to Future-Proof Wallets Against Key Loss and Quantum Computing

Monad is exploring a new wallet architecture that would let users replace the keys securing an account without creating a new address. The proposed system could support passkeys, social recovery and quantum-resistant cryptography while allowing users to keep their existing accounts and assets.

The Ethereum-compatible blockchain is attempting to solve one of crypto’s persistent security problems: losing a private key can permanently lock a user out of their funds. Users who want to upgrade their security can also face the inconvenience of creating a new wallet and moving their assets.

Monad’s proposal would separate the account address from the credentials used to authorize transactions. This means a user could change the authentication method without changing the address associated with the account.

Monad attracted major attention ahead of its 2025 launch, with its developer raising $19 million in 2023 and securing another $225 million in 2024 through a funding round led by Paradigm.

Its new proposal, “Flexible and Upgradeable Account Authentication,” is intended to make accounts more adaptable by supporting passkeys, social recovery and security schemes capable of resisting future quantum computers.

Monad Prepares for Quantum Computing Risks

Quantum computers could eventually threaten existing blockchain security if they become powerful enough to break the cryptographic signatures used to authorize transactions and demonstrate ownership of digital assets.

Bitcoin developers are investigating quantum-resistant signature systems and considering ways to protect older coins whose public keys are already visible. Ethereum has also placed post-quantum security among its longer-term priorities for wallets, staking and smart contracts.

Monad’s approach focuses on making the authentication layer replaceable. If stronger cryptography becomes necessary, users could switch to a quantum-resistant system without changing their wallet address or moving their assets.

The proposal comes as Monad’s decentralized-finance ecosystem continues to grow. According to DefiLlama, the network has around $939 million in total value locked across DeFi applications, with stablecoins accounting for roughly $732 million. Decentralized exchanges have processed about $329 million in volume over 24 hours, while MON was up approximately 2% on Tuesday.

New Design Could Simplify Wallet Recovery

Monad’s proposed system would allow users to add, replace or remove the credentials authorized to approve transactions while retaining their original address.

The credentials could range from standard private keys to passkeys stored on phones and computers. Accounts could also support multiple signers or cryptographic methods designed specifically to defend against quantum attacks.

The architecture could provide a way to recover an account when a key is lost. For instance, users could set their primary key as the normal authentication method while designating two trusted people who would need to act together to approve a replacement if the original key became inaccessible.

The same system could allow an existing wallet to transition to multisignature security or a post-quantum authentication scheme without forcing users to transfer their assets elsewhere.

The proposal remains preliminary. Authors Kushal Babel and Jan Camenisch said the current version outlines the core concept, with a full technical specification still required before implementation.

If approved, the proposed changes would not force existing users to migrate. Current accounts would continue operating as before, while users would gain the option to upgrade their security, recover lost credentials and adopt new authentication methods without changing their addresses.
