Ripple’s Stablecoin Gains Moody’s Approval, but XRP’s Value Proposition Remains Unclear

Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin has received a significant institutional endorsement, with Moody’s assigning it an A2 long-term deposit rating and a P-1 short-term rating, the agency’s highest rating for short-term obligations. The assessment covers RLUSD issued on both the XRP Ledger and Ethereum, offering financial institutions an additional measure for evaluating the dollar-pegged asset.

The recognition comes after Ripple secured final approval to establish a national trust bank under the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). Ripple says the bank will manage RLUSD reserves and provide custody services for institutional clients. The Bank of New York Mellon will continue to serve as the stablecoin’s primary reserve custodian.

Despite these advances, XRP investors face a separate question: will growing demand for RLUSD translate into meaningful value for XRP? Binance’s former BUSD and BNB ecosystem provides a useful point of comparison, although Ripple’s model differs in several important ways.

RLUSD’s Moody’s Rating Supports Ripple’s Institutional Expansion

Moody’s rating gives RLUSD a formal credit assessment that institutional risk teams can incorporate into their evaluation processes. The stablecoin will continue to be issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, Ripple’s New York-regulated subsidiary.

The approved trust bank activities include managing segregated reserves, acting as a collateral trustee, and providing fiduciary custody services for digital assets. Ripple described these activities on October 26.

The rating and banking approval could help Ripple expand into institutional payments, corporate treasury management, and collateral services. However, the extent to which XRP benefits will depend on whether institutions adopting RLUSD also need XRP to facilitate transactions.

Every transaction on the XRP Ledger requires XRP to pay network fees, while accounts must maintain XRP reserves to meet ledger requirements. Increased RLUSD usage could generate additional network activity, but these requirements alone may not create substantial demand for the token.

A potentially stronger driver would be the use of XRP as a bridge asset for cross-currency payments. Financial institutions could use the token to transfer value between different currencies, reducing the need to rely exclusively on dollar stablecoins or traditional intermediaries.

However, RLUSD transfers do not require institutions to purchase XRP equal to the full value of each transaction. On Ethereum, users pay network fees in ETH rather than XRP.

This distinction means RLUSD’s market capitalization could expand considerably without producing a comparable increase in XRP demand. The more favorable scenario for XRP would involve stablecoin adoption leading to greater token liquidity, more bridge transactions, and additional institutional trading activity.

Can XRP Capture Value Like BNB Did in Binance’s Ecosystem?

Binance’s former BUSD ecosystem illustrates how a stablecoin can support a wider cryptocurrency business. BUSD provided dollar-based liquidity, while BNB offered multiple uses across Binance’s exchange and blockchain infrastructure.

BNB supports network fee payments and trading-fee discounts. Binance has also implemented token burns intended to reduce the token’s circulating supply over time. These mechanisms establish more direct connections between BNB and activity across its ecosystem.

Ripple operates differently. RLUSD provides a dollar-pegged asset for payments and settlements, while XRP serves as the XRP Ledger’s native token and a potential bridge currency for moving value between different currencies or assets.

Ripple could develop a stronger value-capture relationship if institutional adoption of RLUSD also increases demand for XRP liquidity and settlement services. The challenge is ensuring that XRP plays a meaningful role in the financial activity surrounding the stablecoin.

For example, imagine RLUSD’s market capitalization growing from $2.5 billion to $25 billion. Such an increase would represent tenfold growth and could significantly expand Ripple’s stablecoin operations.

That expansion would not automatically produce a tenfold increase in XRP’s price. The token’s performance would depend on transaction volumes, XRP Ledger activity, institutional integrations, and the proportion of payments that actually use XRP as a bridge asset.

Ripple may be able to develop a more integrated financial ecosystem, but it would need to strengthen the connection between RLUSD adoption and XRP usage. Stablecoin growth alone would not recreate BNB’s exchange-related utility or the effects of its token-burning mechanism.

Ultimately, Moody’s assessment and Ripple’s trust bank approval could strengthen RLUSD’s institutional standing. For XRP holders, the decisive issue is whether these developments create sustained demand for the token or primarily benefit RLUSD and Ripple’s institutional financial services.
