U.S. Labor Market Weakens as September Jobs Gain Falls to 29,000

Bitcoin remained close to $87,000 after the latest U.S. employment report revealed a much weaker labor market than expected. BTC was up more than 2% over the previous 24 hours.

The U.S. economy added 29,000 jobs in September, according to the government’s Nonfarm Payrolls Report released Friday. The result missed the 90,000 consensus forecast by a wide margin and came after August’s payroll gain was revised to 133,000 from the initial 162,000 estimate.

The unemployment rate climbed to 4.2%, compared with economists’ expectations of 4.1% and August’s 4.1% reading.

Employment growth in earlier months was also weaker than previously reported. July’s 21,000-job increase was revised into a decline of 10,000 jobs.

The disappointing labor-market figures could provide the Federal Reserve with additional scope to leave interest rates unchanged, despite inflation continuing to run at elevated levels.

Bitcoin had already gained before the report and held just below $87,000 immediately after the data was published. U.S. stock futures also strengthened, with Nasdaq futures rising 1.2%.

Treasury yields moved lower as markets digested the weaker employment figures. The 10-year yield fell 7 basis points to 5.17%, while the two-year yield declined by the same amount to 4.71%. Gold prices rose more than 1%, while the dollar weakened against major currencies.

The wage data also came in below expectations. Average hourly earnings increased 0.1% during September, compared with the 0.3% forecast and August’s 0.3% gain.

Annual wage growth slowed to 3%, falling short of the 3.2% forecast and August’s 3.1% increase.
