HIVE Digital Acquires 7.2 MW Toronto Facility to Establish Canadian AI Data Hub

HIVE Digital to Launch Canadian AI Hub with 7.2 MW Toronto Data Center Acquisition

HIVE Digital Technologies (HIVE) has announced the acquisition of a 7.2-megawatt data center in Toronto, Canada, marking a significant step toward expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure via its subsidiary, BUZZ HPC.

The facility is set to become BUZZ HPC’s first Tier 3 data center and will undergo upgrades to support advanced liquid cooling systems. Once operational, it’s expected to house up to 5,000 next-generation GPUs, enabling large-scale AI model training, inference tasks, and cloud services. HIVE noted that the center will also cater to the computing needs of Canadian enterprises and government agencies, strengthening the nation’s digital sovereignty.

“With surging demand for high-performance computing and AI capabilities, this Toronto site provides us with a critical foundation to build a sovereign AI data center — owned and operated in Canada by a Canadian public company,” said Craig Tavares, president and chief operating officer of BUZZ HPC. “It ensures data residency, security, and positions Canada as a leader in national innovation.”

The move comes as nations worldwide race to establish domestic AI infrastructure, competing for the computational resources required to keep pace with rapid developments in generative AI.

For BUZZ HPC, the acquisition represents its first foray into operating its own facility. Meanwhile, HIVE continues to pivot from its origins as a cryptocurrency miner to focus more heavily on AI and cloud services, emphasizing sustainability and renewable-powered data centers.

Other bitcoin mining firms, including Core Scientific (CORZ), have also diversified into AI infrastructure as a way to enhance their revenue streams and adapt to shifting market dynamics.
