Bitcoin Traders Eye $11B Options Expiry as Fed Policy Uncertainty Eases

Bitcoin is preparing for a major derivatives event on October 30, when options contracts worth approximately $11 billion are due to expire. After the Federal Reserve announced its latest interest-rate decision, traders are assessing whether BTC can maintain its current levels as outstanding positions unwind. If the market absorbs the Fed’s decision without renewed selling pressure, Bitcoin could see a temporary rebound.

On October 28, the Fed left interest rates unchanged at 3.75%–4%, as markets had anticipated. However, two policymakers supported a 0.25-percentage-point rate increase instead, revealing differences within the committee over the appropriate policy direction. Although the announcement removed an immediate source of uncertainty, concerns about future rate decisions continue to influence risk appetite.

With the Fed meeting concluded, traders are shifting their focus toward derivatives positioning, liquidity, and investor demand. The upcoming options settlement could become a significant catalyst for Bitcoin’s next price move.

Bitcoin Faces $11B Options Expiry as Calls Dominate Puts

Bitcoin options worth around $11 billion are scheduled to expire on Friday, October 30. The sizeable concentration of open contracts could contribute to increased volatility as the settlement approaches.

Pre-expiry derivatives data showed that call options substantially outnumbered put options. One estimate put the put-to-call ratio at approximately 0.53, suggesting that more call contracts remained open than put contracts. Calls generally benefit from rising prices, while puts can help traders hedge against potential declines.

The imbalance may point to bullish positioning, but it does not guarantee an upward move. Options can be used in complex trading strategies, and the number of open contracts alone does not establish the market’s overall direction.

Another closely watched level is $78,000, which has appeared in estimates of the expiry’s maximum-pain price. This theoretical level represents the point at which the aggregate payout to options holders would be minimized.

Bitcoin is not guaranteed to settle at this price. Market demand, liquidity, and trading activity will determine where BTC trades as contracts expire.

A favorable outcome for buyers would involve Bitcoin holding its support levels during the settlement. If dealers adjust their hedges and expiring positions roll off without triggering significant selling, the market could gain room for a recovery.

Fed’s Rate Decision Removes One Risk, but December Remains in Focus

The latest FOMC meeting is over, but uncertainty about future monetary policy continues. The Fed maintained its benchmark rate while describing economic activity as strong and inflation as elevated.

The two votes supporting a rate hike suggest that some policymakers remain concerned about persistent inflation. Their opposition to the rate hold also makes it harder for investors to interpret the decision as an entirely positive development for financial markets.

Bitcoin’s immediate outlook partly depends on how much of the expected decision was already reflected in prices. When the Fed delivers an anticipated outcome, traders often turn their attention to liquidity, derivatives positioning, and upcoming economic indicators.

This shift could create conditions for a relief rally if investors believe the announcement was less restrictive than expected. However, the possibility of tighter monetary policy later in the year could continue to limit demand for riskier assets.

The Fed’s next meeting is scheduled for December 8–9. Inflation figures, employment reports, and further comments from policymakers could influence expectations before that decision.

Can the Options Expiry Trigger a Bitcoin Recovery?

The Fed’s latest announcement has removed one immediate event risk, but uncertainty over the central bank’s next move remains. The October 30 options expiry is now a key event for traders assessing Bitcoin’s short-term direction.

A smooth settlement could help stabilize prices and give buyers an opportunity to regain momentum. However, changes in dealer hedging and market liquidity could also produce additional volatility, particularly if BTC approaches critical support levels.

A sustained breakout remains possible, but confirmation from fresh buying demand will be essential. Bitcoin’s ability to defend support and attract renewed interest will help determine whether the options expiry marks the beginning of a recovery or precedes another decline.
