Jeffrey Huang, popularly known as Machi Big Brother, experienced a devastating reversal on Hyperliquid after his trading account plunged from a reported peak of $12.25 million to around $21,000 following a liquidation on October 15, 2026.
Blockchain analytics platform Lookonchain reported that Huang had turned $56,000 into $12.25 million over four months. However, the account’s value subsequently collapsed to approximately $21,800, wiping out nearly all of its peak valuation and highlighting the risks of aggressive leverage in cryptocurrency trading.
The liquidation occurred during a broader selloff across crypto derivatives markets. Bitcoin dropped below $81,000, while Ethereum moved closer to $2,380. When leveraged positions incur losses, the value of the collateral backing them can fall below required margin levels, triggering forced closures. These liquidations can introduce additional sell orders and intensify market weakness.
Bitget Research estimated that crypto derivatives liquidations reached approximately $811 million on October 14. Open interest remained near $140.9 billion following the downturn. Another liquidation wave in the 24 hours leading up to October 9 totaled $1.09 billion, with around $1.05 billion attributed to long positions. The figures underline the risks faced by traders positioned for rising prices when the market moves sharply lower.
Inflation concerns added to the pressure on risk assets. September’s annual inflation rate came in at 3.7%, above the market forecast of 3.6%. A stronger inflation reading can reduce expectations for near-term interest-rate cuts and reinforce concerns about restrictive monetary policy, weighing on cryptocurrencies and other risk-sensitive investments.
Ethereum also faced weakening institutional demand, with U.S. spot Ether exchange-traded funds recording $542.2 million in net outflows during the week ending October 9. Against this backdrop, Bitcoin’s drop below $81,000 and Ether’s approach toward $2,380 reflected wider market pressure surrounding Huang’s liquidation.
Bitcoin’s Support Levels Draw Traders’ Attention
The $80,000–$81,000 range became an important technical zone as Bitcoin slipped below $81,000. A breakdown beneath a closely watched support level can prompt traders to reduce their exposure, trigger stop-loss orders and push leveraged positions toward forced liquidation. These reactions can amplify volatility during an already fragile market.
Huang’s Trading Account Loses 99.8% From Its Peak
Huang’s reported account performance represents a dramatic shift in fortunes. His balance reportedly rose from $56,000 to $12.25 million over four months before falling to approximately $21,800 after liquidation. That amounts to a decline of roughly 99.8% from the reported peak.
Hyperliquid perpetual futures enable traders to gain exposure beyond the amount of collateral they deposit by using leverage. When losses push a position’s margin below the required threshold, the platform can close it automatically. The remaining account value depends on the collateral held, any changes to the position and the prices at which trades are executed.
The episode also highlights the difference between unrealized gains and secured profits. An account can show a substantial valuation increase while open trades remain exposed to market fluctuations. If prices reverse sharply, those gains can disappear, and liquidation may leave only a small amount of collateral.
Other large Ether positions have been traded on Hyperliquid, demonstrating the scale of leveraged activity on the platform. However, separate trading activity does not confirm which positions or transactions caused Huang’s reported losses.
Following the liquidation, Huang reportedly returned to the market with a new Ethereum long position using 25x leverage. The trade could generate gains if ETH rises, but the same leverage magnifies losses if prices fall. Even a relatively small adverse move can significantly reduce the margin available to support the position.
Huang’s reported journey from $56,000 to $12.25 million and then to roughly $21,800 illustrates the speed at which leveraged trading fortunes can reverse. The risk attached to his latest ETH position depends on market movements and its specific trading conditions. Its precise liquidation threshold remains unknown without verified details on the entry price, position size, collateral and margin requirements.
