Cardano has been added to the official x402 software toolkit, giving developers infrastructure to build applications and AI agents that can automatically pay for online services with ADA and other tokens issued on the network.

The integration is not yet ready for mainnet use. Cardano’s x402 facilitator has completed a transaction in a pre-production environment, but mainnet testing has not yet been carried out.

x402 Enables AI Agents to Pay Directly

x402 uses the web’s existing “402 Payment Required” response to create a payment flow within standard internet requests.

When a service requires payment, it can return pricing and transaction instructions to the requesting application. An AI agent can then authorize and sign the payment, with the service delivering the requested data or computing resources once the transaction has been verified.

The approach could allow autonomous software to purchase digital resources as needed. For instance, an AI agent creating a report could pay for access to a single dataset without requiring a user to register for an account, enter card information or commit to a recurring subscription.

Coinbase launched x402 in 2025 and later contributed the protocol to a Linux Foundation-backed organization. Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google and Amazon Web Services are among its members.

Solana, XRP Ledger and several Ethereum-compatible networks already support x402, making Cardano the latest blockchain to add tools for the standard.

Cardano Builds the Payment Infrastructure

Cardano Foundation engineers started developing the integration after an x402 specification was accepted in June. The team built client and server components for handling payment requests, along with a facilitator that verifies transactions and submits them to the network.

The initial implementation is available in TypeScript, with Python support expected in a future release.

Documentation for Cardano’s facilitator says it has successfully processed a transaction on the network’s pre-production environment. It has not yet been tested on mainnet.

As a result, the release gives developers a foundation for experimenting with Cardano-based x402 payments, but there is no indication that AI agents are currently using ADA to pay for commercial services at significant scale.

Cardano’s integration places the network alongside Solana and XRP Ledger in the emerging push to support machine-to-machine payments. The broader x402 ecosystem aims to give autonomous software a way to pay directly for digital services, reducing the need for human involvement in individual transactions.
