Binance Hack Fallout Puts CZ Pardon Under Fresh Democratic Spotlight

Democratic lawmakers are renewing their investigation into Changpeng Zhao’s presidential pardon as Binance faces growing scrutiny over a reported $6.34 billion security breach. The latest developments have brought the exchange’s founder back into focus, particularly because Zhao continues to defend Binance publicly despite no longer holding an executive management position.

The October 29 attack compromised Binance’s internal wallet-signing infrastructure, resulting in unauthorized transfers across several blockchain networks. Binance has said it will bear the financial burden of the incident, while CZ has defended the exchange’s handling of the breach and sought to reassure customers.

Although Zhao stepped down as CEO in 2023, his association with Binance remains significant. His continued public involvement in major company developments has raised questions about the extent of his influence following his departure.

Democrats Examine Political Connections Behind CZ Pardon

Democrats are investigating whether political relationships, financial interests, or lobbying activities influenced President Donald Trump’s decision to grant Zhao a pardon in October 2025.

The inquiry gained momentum in May, when lawmakers contacted 17 individuals who had received presidential clemency, including Zhao. They requested information about the application process and any involvement from lobbyists, intermediaries, or political associates. The investigation subsequently widened to include federal agencies involved in reviewing clemency requests.

Binance’s security breach has intensified the political debate. On October 30, Maxine Waters, the ranking Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, raised concerns about Binance’s reported connections to the Trump family’s World Liberty Financial. She also pointed to the SEC’s decision to drop its enforcement case against Binance and Zhao, as well as Trump’s decision to pardon the former executive.

Zhao pleaded guilty in 2023 to failing to maintain an effective anti-money-laundering program at Binance. He resigned as CEO and served four months in prison before receiving Trump’s pardon.

Lawmakers are seeking to establish whether political influence or financial relationships contributed to the clemency decision. The Binance breach has brought additional attention to the exchange, creating overlapping questions about its political connections, security standards, and corporate accountability.

Binance’s $6.34B Breach Raises Questions About CZ’s Influence

Binance’s November 3 update estimated that the October 29 attack affected approximately $6.34 billion in assets. The attacker reportedly gained unauthorized access to an internal wallet-signing service and initiated transactions that bypassed the exchange’s normal withdrawal procedures.

The funds were transferred across several blockchain networks, including XRP, Solana, Optimism, Bitcoin, and Ethereum. Binance said it had frozen or intercepted roughly $2.85 billion, while restoring 98% of the affected token assets by October 31.

The incident involved Binance’s internal wallet infrastructure, not BNB Chain’s consensus mechanism. The exchange reported no compromise of the blockchain’s consensus layer, indicating that the vulnerability was confined to its internal systems rather than the underlying network.

CZ has continued commenting on the situation as Binance manages the aftermath. After Elon Musk appeared to ridicule the incident online, Zhao challenged his remarks and asked him to stop trolling. He also mentioned Binance’s investment in SpaceX, which he valued at more than $1 billion.

Binance co-CEO Yi He later said the exchange generated enough revenue to cover the losses without selling its SpaceX stake. Zhao subsequently clarified that his comments were not an indication that the investment would be sold.

The exchange maintains that its reserves are sufficient to absorb the financial impact and says it is strengthening the affected infrastructure. Its investigation remains underway, with independent cybersecurity assessments planned.

Zhao’s continued public involvement demonstrates that his connection to Binance extends beyond his former CEO position. He remains a prominent spokesperson for the exchange, regularly addressing users and responding to developments involving its operations and financial position.

The simultaneous political investigation and security crisis have placed Binance and its founder under renewed scrutiny. While Democrats seek answers about the process behind CZ’s pardon, the exchange must also demonstrate that its internal security measures can adequately protect customer assets.
